Georgia McAlpine's new single "Don't You Say" is an ode to unconditional love, one where walking down supermarket aisles is just as thrilling as going to Mars - as long as you're with the person you love. Life of course, especially in these recent years, has been challenging and with that, showing & feeling love can feel harder than usual. However Georgia's new single explains that sometimes the best way to show someone you care, is to just stay.

I asked Georgia to describe her process of writing "Don't You Say" & reminisce about moments along her singing career.

1) When did you know you wanted to be a singer?

I'm not sure there is a specific moment that I can pin point. I think it's something that's always been in the back of my mind but it wasn't necessarily something that I thought was possible. Some of the biggest moments that have reminded me that singing is something I wanted to do as more than just a hobby is when I have been watching live music. Watching people like Meg Mac, Missy Higgins and so many other incredible artists remind me that this is what I want to do and that I can make it happen.

2) What is your creative process?

This changes a lot for me but I find I'm most creative in writing when I'm not thinking about it too much. Writing music is my way of expressing things or coming to terms with it and I often sit down and write an entire song in small periods of time when I really need to process something or understand why I'm feeling the way I am. Often, I'll sing something and then be a bit taken back because I wasn't even aware that was how or what I was feeling. I normally write lyrics and guitar parts simultaneously as I find the words just sound a certain way in my head and I try to translate that into guitar or a melody.

3) What has been a pivotal moment in your singing career?

It was probably the moment I realised for the first time that making some sort of a career out of being a musician was possible. I released some songs in 2018 after recording them for fun. I never really intended on putting them online but kind of thought why not? I was actually overseas for the next 6 months so I strategically released them while I was away so I didn't have to see anyone after! But that period was super inspiring because it meant so much to me receiving little messages from people about how they related to the song or just enjoyed listening to it.

I guess that moment taught me a little to just have enough bravery to take the first step and then deal with what follows.

4) What has been your favourite gig?

There have been lots of favourites! Singing at Optus stadium was pretty surreal and an amazing opportunity but I think mother favourite was just after lockdown last year at the Rosemount. It was one of my first gigs back and it was seated due to restrictions. I didn't know a single person in the room and I was really nervous but as everyone sat in candlelight, I was amazed by how engaged everyone was. I think people were reminded of how much they loved live music after going without it for a while.

5) Your new song “Don’t you say” is absolutely divine, describe the process of writing this song and the feeling once you heard the final song.

The process of writing this song and then having it produced by Matt Gio and Rada studios and then releases was so much fun! When I wrote the song, it was pretty acoustic and slow and actually in a different time signature. The song was still quite different to other stuff I had written and Matt really helped me take it to another level. He is so creative and when I heard the final product I loved that it still sounded like an authentic version of me as an artist but that my style was developing into something more modern.

6) Where do you get your inspiration from for your songs?

I'm mostly inspired by personal experiences. I just find writing songs such a therapeutic way to deal with something, which I guess is why most of my songs seem quite sad!

7) Who is someone you would love to collaborate with?

There are so many incredible artists both local and international that I would love to work with. I think if you asked 12 year old me I would have said Missy Higgins! She is still a great influence and I just love how authentic she is. I think if I had to pick anyone right now it would be Thelma Plum though! I think she tells incredible stories through such catchy and clever songs.

8) What is your go to karaoke song?

I'm not sure! Maybe Valerie... but that's a lot of peoples!

9) It must be nerve wracking performing in front of lots of people, have you ever dealt with performance anxiety? And if so, how did you deal with it?

Sometimes I get really nervous and other times I don't. I haven't quite worked out exactly triggers it yet! But I do find performing in front of more people much easier than performing in a room of 1-10 people. I think once I step on a stage I feel disconnected enough from the room to feel as though I'm really "performing" and that just gives me a great adrenaline rush.

10) What do you hope your future to look like?

I think ideally if I can write songs and tour at least around Australia, that would be so much fun! I hope to have a band that brings lots of energy and fun to my songs too! I would also love to continue working part time in a completely different industry at the same time, as I love a bit of variety in how I use my brain and spend each day.

11) What are you working on at the moment?

I just started studying at WAAPA which has been so much fun in my first week. That will keep me pretty busy and writing lots I'm sure. I'm also planning to release another music video soon!

12) What advice do you have for people wanting to follow their dreams and pursue a career in music?

I think the biggest thing I've learnt is that there are so many opportunities once you take those first nerve wracking steps.

Just do one thing today that will help you find those opportunities, no matter how big or small.

And be yourself as both a person and a performer. You can tell on stage when someone is so authentic and for me it just radiates the best kind of energy and draws everyone in to forget that anything else exists in that moment.

You can check out Georgia's new single "Don't You Say" on Spotify now! Also, keep an eye out for her new music video that I had the pleasure to work on, with our mutual & dear friend Grady O'Connell.
